How My Carpal Tunnel Journey Started: Symptoms, Changes, and Challenges

Introduction:

When I first started experiencing pain in my wrist, I didn’t know what it was. At first, I thought it was just a temporary issue—something that would go away with rest. But over time, I realized this pain wasn’t going to disappear on its own. In today’s post, I’m going to share how it all began, the symptoms I first noticed, and how they have changed over the last two and a half years.

How It All Started:

My Carpal Tunnel journey began two and a half years ago when I was spending long hours working on my computer. I was preparing for an important certification exam, and my study routine involved typing for three to four hours a day, practicing exam questions. I didn’t think much of the pain in my wrist at first, assuming it was just a side effect of all the typing.

But after a month of this routine, I began noticing that the discomfort in my wrist wasn’t going away. It was more than just soreness—it was persistent, nagging pain. Despite this, I pushed through, thinking it would eventually pass. But as time went on, it became clear that this wasn’t something temporary.

Early Symptoms:

The pain began to increase over time. It wasn’t until I’d spent several hours typing that I really started feeling it—sharp, throbbing pain in my wrist that wouldn’t go away with rest. The first thing I did to relieve the discomfort was take Tylenol, which provided some temporary relief. But whenever I went back to my work or study sessions, the pain would return just as strong as before.

At that point, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. My wrist was aching constantly, and no matter how much I tried to rest it, the pain persisted.

Changes Over Time:

As the months went on, the symptoms didn’t improve. The pain became more intense after long sessions of typing. I started noticing that the discomfort interfered with my ability to do simple tasks, like gripping my phone.

Over time, the pain in my wrist began to spread to my forearm, and it became difficult to even pick up a pen. Despite trying to push through, it was clear that this wasn’t just a strain from overuse. The pain persisted, and as it continued, I knew something had to be done.

Challenges I Faced:

Dealing with this constant pain wasn’t just physically draining—it was emotionally challenging, too. It affected my ability to focus and be productive, especially when using my computer or phone. Simple tasks I’d never thought twice about, like scrolling through social media, became difficult and painful.

Eventually, I reached a point where I couldn’t keep ignoring the issue. That’s when I decided to visit a doctor for advice.

Current Symptoms:

Now, two and a half years into this journey, the pain is still present—but I’ve learned to manage it. It remains in my wrist, palm, and forearm, and I still experience pain in my fingertips after long periods of typing. It’s not as unbearable as it used to be, but it’s a constant reminder to listen to my body and take breaks.

I’ve made ergonomic changes to my workspace, and I’ve incorporated stretching exercises into my daily routine. Though the pain isn’t gone, it’s more manageable now.

Looking Forward:

Living with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has been a journey of learning and adapting. Although the pain is still a part of my life, I’ve found ways to manage it. In my next post, I’ll dive into the activities that make my symptoms worse and share some stretching exercises that help alleviate the pain. I’ll also walk through the changes I’ve made to my workspace to reduce strain and make my daily routine more comfortable.
