How My Carpal Tunnel Journey Started: Early Symptoms, Daily Challenges & What Helped

Introduction

I never thought wrist pain could impact my life so deeply. At first, I assumed it was temporary pain and the kind of ache that comes from working too hard and sleeping too little. But as the days turned into weeks, and then months, I realized something was wrong. The pain wasn’t going away... it was growing.

In this post, I’m sharing the beginning of my Carpal Tunnel journey: the early symptoms, how it affected my daily life, and the challenges I faced over the past two and a half years. My hope is that my story helps others recognize the signs early and feel less alone in their recovery.

How It All Started

My Carpal Tunnel journey began two and a half years ago when I was spending long hours working on my computer preparing for an important certification exam. My daily routine involved typing for three to four hours a day, practicing exam questions and reviewing notes. Like many people, I didn’t think much of the wrist pain that showed up, assuming it was fatigue from all the typing.

But after a month of this routine, I began noticing that the discomfort in my wrist wasn’t going away. It was more than just soreness and it was persistent, nagging pain. Despite this, I pushed through, thinking it would eventually pass. But as time went on, it became clear that this wasn’t something temporary. I now wish I had listened to my body earlier.

Recognizing the First Symptoms

At first, it was manageable.... a dull ache, maybe a slight numbness after typing. But it didn’t take long before the symptoms escalated. I started feeling:

  • Throbbing pain in my wrist during and after long typing sessions

  • Tingling in my fingers, especially at night

  • A sense of weakness when gripping things

I tried to manage it on my own. I took Tylenol, iced my wrist, and rested between tasks. It helped a little, but only temporarily. As soon as I got back to work or study mode, the pain returned.

At that point, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. My wrist was aching constantly, and no matter how much I tried to rest it, the pain persisted.

How My Symptoms Evolved Over Time

As the months went on, the symptoms didn’t improve. The pain became more intense after long sessions of typing. I started noticing that the discomfort interfered with my ability to do simple tasks, like gripping my phone.

Over time, the pain in my wrist began to spread to my forearm, and it became difficult to even pick up a pen. Despite trying to push through, it was clear that this wasn’t just a strain from overuse. The pain persisted, and as it continued, I knew something had to be done.

Challenges I Faced Living With Carpal Tunnel

The physical pain was frustrating enough.... but the emotional toll was unexpected.

There were times I felt helpless. Productivity took a hit, especially when I had deadlines. I couldn’t type as fast. I had to take breaks constantly. Even scrolling social media or messaging friends became uncomfortable.

I started to feel isolated. I wondered if anyone else was struggling with something that seemed invisible to others but consumed my everyday life.

Eventually, I reached a point where I couldn’t keep ignoring the issue. That’s when I decided to visit a doctor for advice.

Where I Am Now: Managing the Pain

Two and a half years later, the pain is still part of my life, but I’ve found ways to manage it. The symptoms haven’t completely disappeared, it remains in my wrist, palm, and forearm, and I still experience pain in my fingertips after long periods of typing. It’s not as unbearable as it used to be, but they’re more stable. I’ve learned to adjust my lifestyle and workspace to support recovery.

Today, I still feel:

  • Wrist and palm pain after long typing sessions

  • Tingling in my fingertips when I’m not mindful of posture

  • Forearm soreness if I skip stretches or overuse my hand

But with a few key changes like ergonomic tools, incorporating daily stretches to my daily routine, and building better habits... I’ve made real progress. Though the pain isn’t gone, it’s more manageable now, but it’s a constant reminder to listen to my body and take breaks.
